Further information is being shared on the status of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin, who was a late scratch against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were bested 6-1 by the Tampa Bay Lightning in last night's game at Amalie Arena, dealing a serious blow to their already faint playoff hopes.
The Penguins weren't helped by the fact that star veteran forward Evgeni Malkin was named a late scratch due to what was described as an upper-body injury.
Back at practice today, Malkin made an appearance on the ice and looked like his normal self.
However, it's too early to say if he'll be able to play against the Sabres tomorrow night.
According to beat writer Josh Yohe, head coach Mike Sullivan didn't offer much more than he continues to undergo evaluations.
Evgeni Malkin was a late scratch because of an upper-body injury.

He took part in the morning skate and was in his customary position centering the second line. He also was scheduled to play on the top power play, as he had against the Florida Panthers with much success. Malkin looked fine during the skate. I would assume that whatever is bothering him isn't major, but of course, I don't wish to speak for him.

Emil Bemstrom dressed in Malkin's place. Sullivan said after the game that Malkin is being evaluated but offered no more information. He remains with the team and was seen outside of the locker room following the game.

Malkin might not be what he once was, but it's notable how quickly the Penguins become a one-line team when he's not available.

Malkin has 46 points (15G, 31A) in 62 games this year.
