Mario Lemieux is one of, if not the greatest player in NHL history, but on social media, some fans have taken to disrespecting the Pittsburgh Penguins icon.
Throughout the history of the NHL, there have been countless superstars, but few transcend every era, and one of those is Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
However, on social media, Barstool Sports personality 'Barstool Chief' has now made a blasphemous statement, disrespecting the Penguins legend by not including him in his NHL 'Mount Rushmore', instead opting for Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr,
Sidney Crosby and
Connor McDavid (if he wins a Stanley Cup).
Unsurprisingly, Penguins fans were furious with the list, and while he included Sidney Crosby, with many having Gordie Howe over Crosby on their Mount Rushmore, to leave Lemieux off entirely is a ridiculous notion, as he is one of the most accomplished players in league history despite not getting to 1,000 total games played.
While it was a shortened career for No. 66 given that he dealt with many health issues, he still played in 915 games over his career, and in that time he tallied a ridiculous 690 goals and 1,723 points, putting him 8th all time on the NHL's leading scorers, with everyone ahead of him playing a minimum of 1,348 games.
Simply put, any list of the greatest NHL players that doesn't include Lemieux is ridiculous at best, because if he hadn't missed three full seasons due to health issues, he likely would have been the second ever player to pass 2,000 points, but even with that, he should still always be considered at very worst a top five player in NHL history.
