Former Pittsburgh Penguins Forward Leaves NHL for New Team Overseas
Jesse Puljujarvi never found his footing in his second NHL stint, and now the former top-five draft pick is once again departing the NHL for an overseas contract.
The Pittsburgh Penguins took a flier on Jesse Puljujarvi after a disappointing stint with the Edmonton Oilers, but unfortunately, he could never recapture the form that once made him one of the league's most exciting young players.
In 48 games between 2023 and 2025, the former No. 4 overall pick tallied just 6 goals and 13 points before being waived late in the season, and after failing to catch on with his third team since leaving Edmonton, his NHL future was seen as uncertain at best.
Despite playing a solid role in the Charlotte Checkers Calder Cup Playoffs run, his future now lays beyond the NHL, as he has reportedly signed a new deal, as he will be heading to Switzerland to play with Geneva-Servette HC on a one-year contract.
Dating back to 2016, the talented forward has played in 387 NHL games, and while he's flashed brilliance, he's unfortunately lacked the consistency and the development that was expected of him, and now, he's headed overseas once again.
At 27-years of age, there's still plenty of time for him to turn things around and become a genuine contributor at the NHL level, but to do that, perhaps his best bet is to head overseas and become a dominant player once more.
Whether he's still got that game in him or not, only time will tell, but this is still a player with immense talent, and while he hasn't been able to display that in the NHL, perhaps his newest deal in Switzerland will be the opportunity he needs to get back to that game.
