Respected NHL insider Renaud Lavoie believes that a Sidney Crosby trade to the Montreal Canadiens will happen, and it's up to the captain to sign off on it.

Renaud Lavoie reports that the Montreal Canadiens, among a few other teams, are monitoring the situation in Pittsburgh with Sidney Crosby closely. Lavoie believes a trade will happen, but it all depends on whether Crosby will agree to one.
"It's certain that it's going to happen, Lavoie said. We just need Sidney [Crosby] to say yes."

NHL insider Frank Seravalli agrees that Montreal is the most likely destination to land Sidney Crosby

Bleacher Report's Frank Seravalli was of the same mindset, proposing that a theoretical Crosby trade to Montreal would come down to two determining factors.
Appearing on Sportsnet's The Big Show with Rusic and Rose, Seravalli detailed that both a competitive and personal fit would need to be in place for the trade to occur.
Montreal, he said, fits the bill on both counts. Crosby idolized the Canadiens as a kid, a connection made by his father and the team's massive popularity in Atlantic Canada.
"I think the Montreal Canadiens, with his love of that team as a kid and from a competitive standpoint about a team on the rise - that's the type of dream scenario that it would take," Seravalli said. "But even then, I think it's going to require a big change for a creature of comfort. But could they fit Sidney Crosby in? The answer is yes."

That lifelong affection was on display when Crosby was given a long-standing ovation at the Bell Center last winter during the Four Nations Face-Off, a moment Seravalli said "meant a lot" to the Penguins captain.
The Canadiens' revival under head coach Martin St. Louis has also made Montreal more desirable.
"They have a bit of an aura around their team, some swagger," Seravalli said. "That marketplace is on fire, their coach is obviously really well liked, and they have high-end talent that's capable of doing things that few other teams are."

Since they got back to the playoffs a year ago, the Canadiens have continued the energy into the new season, now sitting with a 5-2 record and positioning themselves among the Eastern Conference's top groups.
While there is no trade pending, the increased speculation represents the uncommon time where Crosby's legacy, loyalty, and future chapter potentially converge.
Should he ever depart Pittsburgh, Montreal would be the one location that could arguably feel like home.
