Kyle Dubas Shares One of the Unorthodox Question He's Asking in Coach Interviews
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has a specific question that he's running past potential head coaching candidates as he works to narrow down the list.
One of several NHL clubs that are
looking for their next head coach is the Pittsburgh Penguins, who decided not to bring back Mike Sullivan after nearly 10 full years on the job.
After the club missed the playoffs for the 3rd straight year, general manager Kyle Dubas decided that a change was necessary and announced that Sullivan would not return.
While Sullivan has already resurfaced as head coach of the New York Rangers, Dubas continues his work of interviewing candidates for the Penguins' vacancy while also overseeing the Canadian squad overseas in the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
Dubas, who is reportedly considering Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love among others, has a
specific question in mind for the candidates that he's interviewing per The Athletic's Josh Yohe.
One thing I'm doing in these interviews is I'm asking people for their feelings on our roster. Asking about specific players. I want a new coach to feel comfortable with the roster and confident in voicing opinions on the roster. I want our scouts to give their views, a new coach to give views. I have my views. I want everyone to get their views out there and I want a new coach in place to take part in that. I think it's very important, very beneficial.
The Penguins roster continues to be led by the franchise's iconic trio of
Sidney Crosby,
Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. While Crosby is under contract for another 2 years, the prevailing thought is that Malkin could retire next summer.
Additionally, Letang has experienced a host of health issues over the years, including a pair of strokes while also undergoing recent heart surgery. How much longer he decides to keep playing professional hockey remains up in the air.
