The Pittsburgh Penguins lost a dramatic game on Thursday, and now a top veteran and their coach have responded to a game breaking play against St. Louis.
While the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup hopes are completely gone in 2024/25, that doesn't mean they want to give up on winning games, and on Thursday night, they were robbed of a win in overtime against the Blues.
After 10 wins in a row, the Penguins went to St. Louis to battle the red-hot Blues, and with a last second goal to
Rutger McGroarty, the team sent it to overtime where Kris Letang was called for a very questionable slash.
After that, the Blues made it 11 straight after a fantastic pass from
Cam Fowler to
Jordan Kyrou for the game winner, cementing this team as the hottest in the NHL and a major threat down the stretch.
However, no one in Pittsburgh was happy after that call, with both Kris Letang and Mike Sullivan speaking out on the play that cost the Penguins a potential victory in OT.
«Relative to what wasn't called prior to that, let's just say, we weren't happy." - Sullivan
As for Letang, he admits that there's nothing he can do in that moment, and while he disagreed with it, he simply has to accept it and move on, something the team have had to do a lot of in 2024/25.
«I was surprised,» he said. «I can't do anything about it. Every time there is close to a scoring chance whatever. I don't know. He made a call. It is what it is.»
Ultimately, this wasn't a call that will cost the Penguins a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that doesn't mean bad officiating should be accepted, and with both Letang and Sullivan speaking out, it shows just how bad of a call this one was.
