Mike Sullivan Announces Latest Injury Updates Affecting the Penguins Roster

While the Pittsburgh Penguins are out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs race in 2024/25, they've got some big games coming up down the stretch, with the team looking to finish the season with some positives as they've called up some very young names.

Unfortunately, part of those call ups were due to injuries to the likes of Tommy Novak, Evgeni Malkin and Pierre-Olivier Joseph, and on Wednesday, Head Coach Mike Sullivan has provided updates on all.

Some are positive, beginning with Malkin, who Sullivan notes will travel with the team on their three-game road trip, and while he only skated on an individual basis on Wednesday, there's always the possibility he returns to the ice in the very near future.

Then there's Joseph, who also skated on an individual basis, and while he didn't indicate Joseph's availability to travel with the team on the road trip, it's a positive update for the talented forward.

Then there's Tommy Novak, who was picked up by the team from Nashville at the deadline, and unfortunately, he remains off the ice, with the possibility that he doesn't play another game for the team this season.

As for Joona Koppanen, he was recalled on an emergency basis, with Sullivan stating that several players are banged up, and while he didn't reveal any names, it's no surprise given how often players are dealing with bumps and bruises this late in the year.

At this point, there's a chance that some of these players return soon and there's a chance that some don't return at all, and while the Penguins would love to have them in the lineup, these absences are leading to valuable opportunities for young names that can stake a claim to their spot before the 2025/26 campaign.
