NHL Insider Frank Seravalli Confirms Penguins are Interested in Top Head Coach
The Pittsburgh Penguins have a huge decision to make this summer on their next Head Coach, and now their interest in Rick Tocchet has been officially confirmed as they look to bring back a former assistant.
After 10 years and two Stanley Cups behind the bench, the Pittsburgh Penguins moved on from Mike Sullivan this summer, and with a huge decision to make, they're taking their new Head Coach search slowly.
While they have stars like
Sidney Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins could also be looking towards the future, and that means their Head Coach search is even tougher, as there's a chance that they are looking towards a big name coach, but with the potential rebuild/re-tool, they could instead look for a cheaper, younger option instead.
Now, Insider Frank Seravalli has at the very least confirmed that the Penguins are interested in former assistant Rick Tocchet, who has spent the last few years behind the bench in Vancouver as the Head Coach.
«He's interviewed and been offered the job in Seattle. I think he's interviewed with the Flyers, if you even need one. The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested. I think the Boston Bruins are interested."
Given his connections to Pittsburgh, this isn't a surprise, and it also isn't a shock to see that every team remaining in the search for a Head Coach is reportedly interested in the 61-year old.
After Mike Sullivan's deal in New York, he remains the highest paid coach in the league, and now, it appears as though Tocchet could surpass that mark, so while it may not end up being in Pittsburgh, we now know that the team are officially courting him.
