Penguins Facing Difficult Ultimatum With Young Player as He is Set to Become a Free Agent Tomorrow

June 1st is a big day around the NHL for teams needing to sign young players before potential re-entry into the NHL Draft, with Pittsburgh needing to make a big decision on one young player: Cooper Foster.

The 20-year old was originally a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, and with the team yet to make a decision on him, if they don't sign him by the end of day, he'll be eligible to re-enter the 2025 NHL Draft.

This past season, the 6-foot-0 forward put up another solid year in the OHL with the Ottawa 67's, tallying 19 goals and 53 points in 55 games played, giving him a solid 105 points in his last 114 games played.

While those numbers are good, there are still major question marks over his future, and with the team not committing to him with an entry-level deal, at this point in time, all signs are pointing towards him entering the NHL Draft once more.

Letting go of a player with clear talent isn't ever an easy decision, but Foster has been nothing but steady throughout his OHL career thus far, and perhaps Dubas and the front office don't see full-time NHLer potential in him.

Regardless, they'll need to make a decision on him soon or he will leave the organization and head back into the NHL Draft, so keep a close eye on the Penguins today as they look to continue adding young talent to the prospect pipeline.
