Penguins' Future in Focus as Kyle Dubas Scouts Key Draft Targets
Two top prospects in the 2025 NHL draft have reportedly caught the attention of Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas.
The Pittsburgh Penguins do not have a very good prospect pool. It has improved in recent years, but after decades of success it is still not very deep.
Unfortunately, it remains unlikely that the team will win the draft lottery. Currently they have just the 7th-best odds at 6.5%.
As a result, the team will most likely be selecting somewhere between 5th and 10th overall.
Luckily, there are still many highly-skilled players that are expected to be available in that range.
Two Swedish prospects in particular have reportedly caught Dubas' attention.
They are Djurgårdens forwards and teammates Victor Eklund and Anton Frondell.
Eklund is the younger brother of Sharks forward and former 7th overall pick William, who has become a key part of the team in their rebuild.
The 22-year-old has 16 goals and 52 points through 65 games this season, and many believe Victor could be an even better player.
The younger Eklund brother has 19 goals and and 31 points in 42 games playing in the second tier pro league in Sweden this year.
Meanwhile, Frondell has one big advantage over Eklund and that is that he is a center.
He is also scoring at a higher rate this year with 11 goals and 25 points in 29 games.
Either player would be a huge boost to the Penguins prospect pool, but neither are expected to be franchise-altering talents, so they will still need to add more high-skill prospects around them to form the team's next core.
