Penguins GM Kyle Dubas Confirms He Will Trade Veteran Player for Younger Option
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has confirmed that he's willing to part ways with some veteran players on the Pittsburgh roster in exchange for younger talent.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have already made a major change in direction under GM Kyle Dubas, who let go of head coach Mike Sullivan after nearly 10 years on the job.
Sullivan, who led the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, was unable to guide Pittsburgh to the postseason in each of the last 3 years, the longest drought of captain Sidney Crosby's career.
The Penguins have since hired former New York Rangers assistant coach Dan Muse as Sullivan's official successor, but the work for Dubas this summer is just beginning.
While Dubas would confirm that his club likely won't be major players in the free agent market, he hinted at pending trade activity.
There are teams that have been rebuilding for a while that are looking to take steps. They are interested. That's potentially a good fit with us.
When asked if he plans on being more aggressive in terms of trades, Dubas answered that he will be.
Yeah. Trade, (then) sign guys for longer range (after they've been acquired). UFA isn't a good place to find good value.
Among the players who are on the wrong side of 30 years of age and who are entering the final years of their respective contracts are Kevin Hayes and Noel Acciari.
There has also been speculation as to the future of veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson in Pittsburgh; he could potentially be dealt in return for several draft assets and prospects.
