Penguins GM Kyle Dubas tips hand to summer free agency plans

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas appeared to tip his hand about his plans for his club during the summer when it comes to free agency.
While the 2025 NHL Scouting Combine is underway in Buffalo, fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to wonder not only how general manager Kyle Dubas will utilize their draft selections this year but also what kind of moves he'll be making during the summer to help the club get back to the postseason.
The Penguins have missed the playoffs in each of the last 3 years, the longest drought of captain and future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby's career.
Dubas already made a major change in leadership behind the bench with the dismissal of Mike Sullivan, who is now the head coach of the New York Rangers. Sullivan's successor is Dan Muse, a former assistant with the Rangers.
When it comes to free agency, Dubas appeared to imply that he'll be taking a close look at other NHL clubs with younger players who are being blocked by older veterans on their respective clubs.
I think we look at younger guys that maybe are blocked out elsewhere or are having contract standoffs elsewhere. We'll also look and see if there are players that are available because the cap situations of their respective teams and if we can provide them a good opportunity. I wouldn't say the focus is shifting away from picks. I think our focus will continue to be on acquiring future value, whether that be younger NHL players, prospects or picks.
Dubas has also said they don't expect to be shopping for earth-shattering moves in the summer, and could potentially look for team improvements via trade rather than the free agent market.
