It has been reported that the Red Wings are seriously planning to buy out Justin Holl, which could lead to a reunion with Kyle Dubas for this former Leafs player.
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Justin Holl will probably be a popular name Friday as
the buyout period for the NHL officially opens. The deadline is June 30 at 5 p.m. ET, and any player must go through waivers for the first time before he can be bought out.
Holl being placed on waivers as of Friday would signal that GM Steve Yzerman wants to part with the veteran blue-liner. By doing so, the Red Wings would have a gain of more than $2 million in cap space.
Holl is signed for $3.4 million, and because he is over his 26th birthday, the Detroit organization can buy out the final year of the contract at two-thirds the cost, spreading the hit over two years.
That would lower his cap figure to $1.133 million per year, freeing up an additional $2.267 million of immediate relief for Detroit, and increasing their cap space available to $22.467 million.
Holl's play did pick up in the second half of the season, which is a positive
While coaches have complimented Holl on his play later in the season, he was a plus-1 in his last 21 games, and most fans have soured on the signing for a long time and are eagerly anticipating his departure.
If Detroit does make a move, there's a potential landing spot in Pittsburgh. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas enjoyed having
Holl originally under his stint in Toronto and might seek to reunite with him.
With Pittsburgh needing to retool itself, Holl could be a depth signing if he hits free agency.
