The Penguins are looking to add intriguing NHL talents this summer, but overnight they missed out on a top target due to a surprising Western Conference trade with Nicolas Hague headed to the Nashville Predators before signing a big time extension.
While most people see the Pittsburgh Penguins as a team rebuilding this summer, moves from Kyle Dubas suggest that instead, they could be re-tooling on the fly as they look to contend one more time under
Sidney Crosby's leadership.
That means trades for young, NHL ready players could be the play during the off-season, and on Sunday, they missed out on one of those players as a result of a surprise Western Conference trade.
In the trade, the Vegas Golden Knights sent Nicolas Hague to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Jeremy Lauzon and
Colton Sissons, before signing a four-year, $5.5 million per season extension.
As a result, GM Barry Trotz has received plenty of criticism for handing Hague a massive extension like that, but if the Penguins could have gotten him for cheaper, it's something that they could and should have looked into.
At 26-years of age, Hague isn't the ideal age for a Penguins potential acquisition, as the team are likely seeking players between the age of 21 and 24 for their retool, but he could have been a very solid pickup that came in at a very cheap return, something the Penguins could have looked into.
Ultimately though, the Predators extension wasn't something most teams were willing to give Hague, who hasn't been overly productive in the NHL as of yet, but if the Penguins could have gotten in on this deal, it's one they should have definitely considered.
