Pittsburgh Penguins Vice President of Player Personnel Wes Clark is sending a clear message about the franchise's decision to take Peyton Kettles in the 2nd round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

Among the selections that the Pittsburgh Penguins made in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft was the pick of Peyton Kettles, a defenseman from the Western Hockey League's Swift Current Broncos.
Kettles was taken with the 39th pick, which they acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres that also landed them Connor Clifton; they sent Conor Timmins and prospect Isaac Belliveau to Buffalo in return.
At just 17 years old, Kettles was one of the youngest prospects selected in the Draft. But per Penguins Vice President of Player Development Wes Clark, he checked a lot of boxes for the organization with what they were looking for in terms of defensive depth.
Extremely young for the draft class, 6'6", right shot, elite defensive stick, super competitive and tough. He checks a lot of the boxes, and he'll try and improve certain qualities on the back end with the depth we have with our prospects.

The 13 picks the Penguins had were the most for the organization in several years, and having multiple new young players in their system is something that Clark is looking forward to overseeing.
Competitiveness is extremely important, that and intelligence, hockey sense. 13 picks is a lot and not all of them will work out. Obviously, the more lottery tickets you have, increases your chances to hopefully hit. We'll see as time progresses....it'll be interesting to see who develops quicker than others and who can get there in the end.

He had 14 points (5G, 9A) in 53 games for the Broncos this year.
