A player in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is telling an insider story about new head coach Dan Muse that is turning heads everywhere as he begins his tenure.
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas signaled a major change in direction for the club when he let go of head coach Mike Sullivan after nearly 10 full years on the job.
Sullivan was hired by the Penguins in December 2015 after the firing of Mike Johnston and led them to back to back Stanley Cups and kept them in contention for years afterward. But after missing the playoffs for the last 3 years in a row, Dubas decided a change was necessary.
In comes former New York Rangers assistant coach Dan Muse, who
takes over a Penguins team with aging veterans along with some young talent in the system.
One young player currently with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins is
Marc Johnstone, who previously played under Muse with the USHL's Chicago Steel.
Johnston recently told a story of his past experience with Muse, something that will have Penguins fans looking forward to how he'll oversee the Penguins.
He had us all over at the house, a team gathering. It was pretty cool. He let us see his family and everything. And he just told us what his expectations were. He thought we could win right from the beginning of the season and, when he put that in our minds, we started to believe. And then things turn out that same exact way as he expected.
Everyone liked him, respected him, and just wanted to win for him. He was just a galvanizing part of the team.
While the Penguins aren't expected to contend for a Stanley Cup again any time soon, the hope is that Muse will be able to work toward building the Penguins back into playoff competition and then, eventually, going on deep runs.
