Penguins Winger Still Looking for Next NHL Team After Being Waived in February

Dating back to 2013, Matt Nieto has played in over 700 games at the NHL level, with his peak coming back in 2014/15 when he scored 27 points in a season for the San Jose Sharks.

Since then, he's played in more of a bottom-six role that hasn't allowed him the opportunity to score at a high level, with just 2 goals and 7 points in 54 games with the Penguins over the past two seasons.

Back in February, the organization opted to move on from him and place him on waivers, and now he remains a free agent as the 32-year old continues to look for his next team in the National Hockey League.

Despite the lack of production, Nieto can still be very solid in a small role given to him in the bottom-six, but with so many young players entering the league year after year, spots are harder and harder to come by for veteran players like this.

In the AHL last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Nieto had 7 points in 15 games, and if he wants to continue his journey in hockey, then perhaps an AHL deal may be the way forward for the veteran.

Ultimately, Nieto still has plenty to offer a hockey team, but with a lack of production and younger players looking to fill roles in the bottom-six, it's tough to see him landing a job anytime soon, as he may ultimately have to wait until training camp to see if a spot opens up for him somewhere in the NHL.
