The Penguins have placed newly-acquired suspended defenseman Egor Zamula on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination today.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are waiving defenceman Egor Zamula on Monday with the intention of terminating his contract, according to Chris Johnston and Frank Seravalli.
"Egor Zamula (PIT) is on unconditional waivers for a contract termination -- he'll become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow if unclaimed."

- Chris Johnston

Egor Zamula was already waived by the Philadelphia Flyers this season

The 25-year-old Zamula had already been waived by the Philadelphia Flyers on December 19 and sent down to their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Pittsburgh then acquired him on December 31 in a deal that sent forward Philip Tomasino the other way; Tomasino had also been waived by Pittsburgh in November and sent to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
On Sunday, the Penguins suspended Zamula for not reporting to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The waiver move on Monday formalizes the process as they try to end his $1.75 million contract.
Zamula has played 168 NHL games for several teams, and teams have been showing interest in him around the NHL.
"He has multiple interested NHL suitors."

- Chris Johnston

Why the Penguins avoid any salary-cap penalties in this situation

Because he didn't report and was suspended, Pittsburgh avoids any salary-cap penalties, freeing itself from his roughly $1.7 million cap hit and the roughly $550,000 over the AHL stash limit.
Assuming he clears waivers, Zamula will certainly go on to continue his NHL career with another organization after inking a deal elsewhere.
