Pittsburgh Penguins place veteran forward on waivers putting his NHL future in doubt

Earlier today, reports indicated that Danton Heinen did not have a locker in Chicago ahead of the team's game tonight against the Blackhawks.

This report sparked a lot of speculation about whether it was an honest mistake or whether a move was coming involving Heinen.

Now, reports have confirmed that Heinen has been placed on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the AHL.

The Penguins announced earlier today that Heinen would be on waivers to make room for Blake Lizotte who the team activated off of injured reserve.

Now, every team in the NHL will have an opportunity to claim Heinen and potentially give him another opportunity.

Heinen, 30, is in the 10th season of his NHL career spent with Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks, and Vancouver Canucks who he most recently spent time with playing in the top-six.

Heinen's most recent stint with the Penguins has lasted a season and a half with several games played in AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

With Heinen having already played AHL games this season it is more likely than not that he clear waivers and remains with the Penguins but all it would take is one interested team to give him an opportunity.

Over the next 24 hours, all eyes will be on Heinen to see if he has a new home tomorrow or if he will be assigned to the AHL and remain with the Penguins organization.
