Free agency has been plenty of fun thus far around the NHL, and after making an under-the-radar pickup, the Penguins have now added a former top goal scorer who is coming off an unfortunate injury last season in Calgary.

While the Pittsburgh Penguins weren't expected to make signings on day one of free agency, it appears as though they're closing in on their second low-risk, potentially high-reward signing of the day.
According to reports from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Kyle Dubas and the Penguins are zeroing in on signing veteran Anthony Mantha, who last played with the Calgary Flames in 2024/25.
Unfortunately for the 30-year old veteran, his season ended early with an injury after showing promise, as he ended the campaign in Calgary with 4 goals and 7 points in 13 games played.
In those 13 games however, he showed that he can still be very effective, and with the team needing wingers for Evgeni Malkin, who had a rotating cast alongside him last season, this could be a solid move to bring consistency to his wing.
In 2018/19, Mantha had a career high of 25 goals, scoring 23 in 2023/24 with Vegas and Washington, showing that if he gets back to full health, he could be a great and most important, cheap pickup for Pittsburgh.
If he does get back to that, there's a chance the team can then go ahead and flip him at the trade deadline for a solid draft pick, but for now, they'll hope he can get healthy and contribute to some winning hockey this season, with the Penguins now making two solid additions on day one of free agency.
