The Pittsburgh Penguins have decided against using the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, sending it to the divisional foe Philadelphia Flyers in a surprise move.

The Pittsburgh Penguins came into the 2025 NHL Entry Draft with the 11th and 12th overall selections, having landed the 11th pick in the Draft Lottery and then getting the 12th overall pick from the New York Rangers.
But after using the 11th pick on Benjamin Kindel, they pulled the rug out from under fans when they announced that they would not be using the 12th pick.
They traded the 12th pick to the divisional foe Philadelphia Flyers, and in return received the 22nd and 31st overall picks.
The Penguins have traded the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for the 22nd and 31st overall picks.
The announcement was made with help from Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang and his young son Alex, who pressed the button to display the "Trade Alert" Graphic on the screen at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
With the 12th overall pick, the Flyers selected Jack Nesbitt, a center from the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. His scouting report from Elite Prospects reads as follows:
Nesbitt brings a 6-foot-4 frame, defensive abilities, and sense. He generates chances by breaking plays on the forecheck with precise stick work and by engaging players with his body, bouncing them off the puck.

This year with the Spitfires, Nesbitt had 64 points (25G, 39A) in 65 games.
