The Penguins suffered a loss vs. the Ducks that is being labelled as one we do not see very often, a very rare last-second moment that changed everything.

The Penguins' 4-3 shootout loss to Anaheim on Tuesday was like watching the same script play out again for the Pens at PPG Paints Arena. Yet again, their third-period lead escaped them, and their shootout didn't go their way.
Coach Dan Muse witnessed his group fight hard, but when overtime finished, the result seemed almost inevitable. The shootout situations have been problematic, and the woes of Arturs Silovs have continued.
He has been fooled on the majority of shots that he faced this season, and even when Troy Terry missed the target in Round 1, it was only a matter of time.
Tommy Novak, Sidney Crosby, and Ville Koivunen could not get the better of Ville Husso, who had a poor historical record against Pittsburgh.

What the true surprise of the game was

But the true surprise occurred before all of that. Leading 3-2 late in the game and possessing the power play following the penalty against Chris Kreider, the Pens only had to keep control of the puck, but they didn't.
Beckett Sennecke slipped around Bryan Rust, dangled around Kris Letang, and shot the puck toward the goal.
Erik Karlsson attempted to intercept the puck, but the puck slid through Silovs with a tenth of a second left. It was so close that the Penguins' goal horn went off, as everyone in the arena thought the game was over and the Penguins had won.
"Tuesday was a defeat unlike any other."

- Dave Molinari

Why this was considered a never-before-seen game ending moment

A short-handed, tying goal by a rookie in the last second of the game, something that had never occurred for any NHL club, happened for the very first time.
But the Penguins still managed to gain a point, and every single one of them is precious for a playoff contender, but the one they lost will hurt even more.
