An announcer from the Professional Women's Hockey League appeared to throw some shade at Penguins star captain Sidney Crosby's Olympic achievement.
It's one of the most famous goals in professional hockey history, but is there some shade being thrown at the accomplishment?
Pittsburgh Penguins star captain Sidney Crosby served as captain for the
Canadian Olympic team in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, scoring the iconic "Golden Goal" against the Americans in the gold-medal game.
Not only did the goal give the Canadiens the gold medal, but cemented Crosby as a Team Canada hockey legend for the rest of his life.
The 2010 Winter Olympics were played in Vancouver, and Rogers Arena (briefly re-named Canada Hockey Place), the home of the Vancouver Canucks, was the venue used for hockey.
During the recent announcement that Vancouver is the newest city to welcome a club for the Professional Women's Hockey League, commentator Tessa Bonhomme took a good-natured swipe at Crosby by noting Canadian women's hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin has scored not one but a pair of golden goals:
Vancouver is the newest home to a PWHL team
The PWHL announced Vancouver as the location of its newest expansion team, who will play at the Pacific Coliseum, the former home of the Canucks and the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies.
In a statement announcing the decision, PWHL Executive Vice President of Business Operations Amy Scheer
praised the vibrance of Vancouver while welcoming the new club:
This is a historic day for our league, our fans, our athletes, and our sport. Vancouver is a vibrant city with a deep love for the game-as we saw firsthand during the PWHL Takeover Tour earlier this season. Expanding to Vancouver reflects the growing momentum behind the league and the incredible passion of our fanbase since launching in January 2024.
We're proud to bring the PWHL to the West Coast and provide more fans with the opportunity to experience live the best women's hockey players in the world.
