Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goalie Sergei Murashov joined an elite group of goaltenders after posting his first NHL shutout in the NHL Global Series.

The Pittsburgh Penguins continued their strong start to the year with a 4-0 shutout win over the Nashville Predators in Stockholm as part of the NHL's Global Series.
The Penguins started rookie Sergei Murashov in goal, and he posted his first NHL shutout as part of their win.
He made NHL history in the process, becoming just the third goalie in NHL history to post his first shutout in a game outside of North America, joining former Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas and former Chicago Blackhawks goalie Antti Niemi.
Sergei Murashov became the third goaltender in NHL history a shutout in an NHL regular-season game outside North America. The others: Tim Thomas (29 saves in 2010 Premiere Series) and Antti Niemi (23 saves in 2009 Premiere Series).
After the game, Murashov said that he felt great.
I feel great, actually. It's an amazing performance for the guys. An unbelievable start. Really great job on the (penalty) kill in the second and a really solid third period. So, it's a really good response from the team from the first game.

Because both Niemi and Thomas went on to win the Stanley Cup in their careers, Penguins fans are understandably optimistic.

Murashov Is Playing In His Second Year In North America

Murashov played several years in the KHL in his native Russia and was taken with the 118th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
He played last year in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and went 12-3. He also played for their ECHL affiliate Wheeling Nailers, going 17-7-1.
