After their fourth straight victory, the Penguins sit just six points back of
the final Wild Card spot, but with five teams standing between them and a shot at the post-season, it will be an uphill battle in the final month of the season.
When asked about their situation, captain Sidney Crosby echoed the thoughts of his Head Coach, as he was keeping expectations in check despite plenty of confidence in how this team could play down the stretch.
«We still got a lot of work. We've been doing a good job of focusing on the one in front of us and understanding we got to get points and take care of that... that's been our approach, and we'll keep that."
While it's unlikely that the Penguins make a run down the stretch, as they need to be near perfect through their final 13 games of the season, but among the team, especially the veterans, confidence is high.
Pittsburgh will have some very winnable games down the stretch, playing the Islanders, Sabres, Blackhawks twice and other teams on the playoff bubble, and while the pressure on them to be perfect is high, there's no doubting that crazier things have happened.
When asked about their chances, Bryan Rust kept his response very simple, suggesting that it won't be easy, but there's always a chance as long as they aren't mathematically eliminated.
Have you seen the standings?!
Ultimately, no one possibility can be ruled out this season given how much things can change from day to day in the NHL, and while the Penguins aren't likely to fight their way into the post-season, never say never.
