Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang nearing impressive record set by Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey
Longtime Pittsburgh Penguins teammates Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang were on the ice for the same goal for the 310th time, second only to Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey's mark of being on the ice for the same goal 350 times.
The Pittsburgh Penguins managed to come back in yesterday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets after Sidney Crosby scored twice, followed by a Kris Letang OT GWG.
During the game, the longtime teammates came closer to a record that was set during the dynasty days of the Edmonton Oilers from the 1980s involving Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey.
Crosby and Letang were on the ice together for the same goal for the 310th time, which is now just 40 goals behind the record of 350 set by Gretzky and Coffey during their time with the Oilers.
The long-time Penguins teammates combined on the same goal for the 310th time tonight. The only forward-defenseman duo to combine on more goals in NHL history is Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey (350).
Both Crosby and Letang have won three Stanley Cups together during their time in Pittsburgh, and their play so far this year has been much better than most would have predicted for them.
The Penguins Have Impressed Their Doubters So Far This Year
The Penguins have missed the playoffs in each of the last three years, which is the longest drought in the careers of Crosy and Letang as well as their longtime teammate Evgeni Malkin.
Even though most fans and analysts had them penciled in to
come nowhere close to getting to the playoffs for this season, they've gotten off to a much better start than most would have expected.
The Penguins' win over the Blue Jackets yesterday was their 12th of the season, and they're now in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division.
If the Penguins can keep up their momentum, they could find themselves within striking distance of the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
