Sidney Crosby Joins Wayne Gretzky with Historic Career Milestone
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby put his name right next to Wayne Gretzky today with the latest accomplishment of his storied career.
Sidney Crosby is the most iconic player of his generation. To this day kids growing up in the sport look to him as an idol.
There's good reason for that. Sid the Kid has been one of the best NHL players anyone has ever seen.
He has 615 career goals and 1054 assists for 1669 points in 1339 games played.
Making his career even sweeter is the fact that he has spent all of it with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Today he hit several new career milestones all at once as he got the primary assist on a
Rickard Rakell goal early in the second period against the New Jersey Devils.
The Penguins would go on to win the game by a final score of 7-3, their fourth win in a row.
But that helper from Crosby was the main talking point after the game. With his 1669th point as a Penguin, Crosby tied Wayne Gretzky for fourth all-time in points with a single franchise.
Of course, Gretzky did it in just 696 games, but who's counting?
The assist was historic in another way for Crosby as well, as it gave him 50 on the season, making it his 12th 50-assist season, good for a tie for 8th most all-time.
Crosby would need another six to tie Gretzky on that front, a feat that would require him to play well into his 40s.
This is not the first time Crosby has matched the great one this season.
No one will ever break Gretzky's all-time points record, but one by one his other records have began to fall. How many more can Crosby beat?
