The Pittsburgh Penguins Draft The Next Charlie McAvoy With 73rd Overall Pick

Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins may have drafted the next Charlie McAvoy with the 73rd overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Pittsburgh Penguins had many draft picks coming into the second day of the NHL Draft, and while many hoped to see the team trade a few of them to acquire players, it's hard to complain after Dubas' clever maneuvering in the first round.
The organization drafted three talented players: Ben Kindel, Bill Zonnon, and Will Horcoff at the 11th, 22nd, and 24th picks, adding a lot of depth to the prospect pool.
On the second day of the draft, trade scenarios were still going around, with nine picks in the bank, but the Pens ultimately drafted a player: Charlton Tretheway, with the 73rd overall pick:
Tretheway, a 17-year-old defenseman, scored nine points, including two goals, in 24 games with the U.S. National Development Team, and has high expectations for himself.
In the past few months, he's been very vocal about how he looks up to Charlie McAvoy from the Boston Bruins and tries to model his game after him.
Here's what he said in a recent interview:
"I think Charlie's definitely the main guy, for sure. He's just a great guy. I even model myself after him. I want to be a person like him."
"He's a great person. I definitely think his play is a lot like mine. He's definitely a guy that I look up to. ... It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I definitely look back on it and just really appreciate the conversations, him taking his time to work out with me and talk through some things with me. It was a great memory, for sure."

Greg Moore, Tretheway's coach, opened up on that comparison:
"They both have great shots. A lot of using their skating to defend plays up ice, their gaps. It's definitely a player that we've targeted for him to watch and study, model his game after."
The Pens may have gotten a good one with Tretheway, but fans will need to wait a few years before seeing him in the NHL.
