Top KHL Source Believes Penguins are About to Sign Key Prospect Earlier Than Expected
One of the top KHL sources has revealed that the Penguins could be signing prospect Mikhail Ilyin to an entry-level deal a lot sooner than initially expected.
There was some hope that one budding young player would be joining the organization next season, which at first appeared wouldn't be the case.
Russian forward prospect Mikhail Ilyin, who was selected by the Penguins in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, signed an extension to remain with the Severstal Cherepovets of the KHL next season, only just a few weeks ago.
Ilyin initially declined a Penguins contract a few weeks ago
The Penguins made an offer to Ilyin at the start of the month, but he declined it. Now, that appears to be changing, as a top KHL source has indicated that he may be signing an entry-level contract a lot sooner than expected.
Ilyin, 20, has spent the majority of the past three years with Severstal, scoring seven goals and 30 points in 64 games last season.
The 6-foot, 180-pound winger is known for his smart plays and attention to detail, and his playmaking and passing skills are also key to his game. While his skating needs a tiny bit of work, his vision pretty much makes up for it.
Many were hoping Ilyin would be playing in North America next season, but given the success he's seen with Severstal in his third season with the team, it was understandable why he may want to develop more with Severstal at first.
However, there may be a change of heart now, and fans could soon get their wish. Ilyin has registered 19 goals and 61 points in 150 games across parts of three years with the Cherepovets.
