Top Penguins Draft Pick Praised for 'Swagger' at Development Camp
The top Penguins pick at the most recent NHL Entry Draft has been receiving a lot of praise at development camp, with many saying he has "swagger."
Zonnon revealed that P.K. Subban was his childhood idol
A Togolese-born child who grew up in Montreal,
Zonnon was one of the early adopters of the game. Zonnon idolized P.K.
Subban during his childhood, and the duo shared a memorable moment on draft night. Subban went on to acknowledge their connection on Instagram, basking in the influence he had on a young Zonnon.
Like his childhood hero, Zonnon behaves with panache and confidence, but he remains humble as well when he is about to take the next great step in his professional life.
"Once I step on the ice, that's when I really feel confident. It's where I let my confidence show," Zonnon said. "I'm a confident player and I work pretty hard on my craft, so why not bring some swagger when I get on the ice?"
Zonnon continued, "I think the biggest thing I took away from [Subban] was just being yourself. He was not scared of what other people thought or what they were going to say about him. So just be myself and not change for anyone else."
Zonnon dressed for three years with the QMJHL's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, registering 62 goals and 118 assists over 195 regular season games.
He excelled when it mattered most, pacing his team in the playoffs last season with eight goals and eight assists in 13 outings.
Now in the Penguins organization, Zonnon knows the NHL is one step higher. He is eager to learn from veteran players and coaches as he continues to chase his dream. Kyle Dubas is sure glad he chose him, and fans are definitely excited to see what he can offer.
