Hockey is a very dangerous sport, and that's on display in Sweden, as Swedish Star William Eklund has suffered a brutal injury after being cut by a skate.
Team Sweden are gearing up for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, and over the weekend they're playing in a friendly with Switzerland to warm up for what will be a key tournament heading into the 2026 Olympic Games.
Unfortunately, one of their top stars has now suffered a brutal injury, as San Jose Sharks star William Eklund was cut with a skate on the wrist in a very scary moment in their latest game.
The play clearly wasn't intentional, as Eklund was behind an opposing player, and as he took off, his skate came up behind him and cut the 22-year old's hand, and immediately he knew it.
Eklund quickly dropped his stick and his gloves and grabbed at his wrist, skating off the ice as quick as he could as he went to seek medical attention from the staff in Sweden.
Thankfully, Eklund's agent Todd Diamond has revealed the early diagnosis, and it's a very positive one for the young forward:
"He's stable, looks like it didn't cut key tendons or nerves at the moment."
In 2024/25, Eklund had a career year, posting 17 goals and 58 points in 77 games played, and while he may not be able to play in the upcoming tournament, the hope is that he could get back on the ice for the 2025/26 campaign with San Jose.
Ultimately though, this was a very positive outcome for what looked to be a brutal injury, and while we won't know an injury timeline until further testing is done, at this point in time, it looks like Eklund has avoided any major damage.
