The future of Pittsburgh Penguins prospect goaltender Taylor Gauthier, who has been getting plenty of experience in the minors, with the franchise appears cloudy at best.
While Pittsburgh Penguins prospect goaltender Taylor Gauthier has been getting plenty of game action in the minor leagues, his future in the NHL with the Penguins appears cloudy at best.
Per Seth Rorabaugh of The Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Gauthier's path to a regular roster spot with the Penguins is essentially blocked.
The future: Aside from his health woes earlier this season, Gauthier has largely done just about everything he can to improve his standing with the organization over his three seasons with the Penguins since joining as an undrafted free agent.
Given his pending restricted free agent status, he could very well be re-signed to fill the same role he has the past three seasons. But assuming he harbors larger aspirations, he may have to go somewhere else to realize them.

If Gauthier is content to remain splitting his time between the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers, he could very well elect to sign a new deal with the organization.
However, Rorabaugh paints a murky picture with regard to Gauthier's chances of being a regular with the Penguins.
No matter what he does with the Penguins, Gauthier's path with the organization appears to be blocked.
Gauthier was never drafted in the the NHL; he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Penguins.
This year with Wheeling, he went 18-10-2 with a 2.06 GAA, a .928 SV% and a pair of shutouts. He also won his only game with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by posting a shutout.
