The Toronto Maple Leafs are beefing up their defense, making a significant move on Sunday by bringing in defenseman Nicolas Mattinen. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Mattinen has long been on the Maple Leafs watchlist.
Originally drafted by the team in the sixth round back in 2016, Mattinen has been something of a dark horse, defying the odds typically faced by late-round picks. His relentless effort to elevate his game hasn't gone unnoticed.
Over the years, Mattinen has honed his skills across various leagues, including the Ontario Hockey League and the American Hockey League, and he's even spent some time playing in Europe. Most recently, he showcased his abilities in Germany with the Straubing Tigers of the DEL league.
Last season, Mattinen impressed on the ice, racking up 46 points in 52 regular-season games and playing a pivotal role in the playoffs.
With Mattinen's signing, the Maple Leafs are clearly aiming to strengthen their defensive line and boost their overall performance in the coming seasons.
