Analyst James Mirtle has revealed what could go a long way in getting Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes to sign a new deal with the team.

It was a rough year for the Vancouver Canucks, who didn't come close to living up to the expectations that came with having won the Pacific Division in 2024 and advancing to Game 7 of the WCSF.
Not only did the Canucks miss the playoffs, but they also went through an awkward several weeks of a conflict between top forwards JT Miller and Elias Pettersson that eventually resulted in Miller being traded to the New York Rangers.
Additionally, former Jack Adams Trophy-winning coach Rick Tocchet departed the team and has since found work as the new head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Something else on the minds of Canucks fans is the future of captain and former Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes with the team. He has only 2 years left on his current deal, and there hasn't been much progress on a new contract.
Per a report from analyst James Mirtle of The Athletic, the Canucks enjoying a bounce-back year could go a long way in convincing him to re-sign with the team, or else they would likely have to start thinking of other arrangements.
Maybe Vancouver surprises and has a huge bounce-back season that convinces their captain to stay. Feels unlikely to me, to be honest, but that's their best-case scenario. Otherwise, they have to start contemplating what a blockbuster trade might look like and whether it's all about futures.

Hughes' AAV (average annual value) over the next 2 years of his contract is $7,850,000, a number that will rise significantly on his next deal.

Could Quinn Hughes go to the Devils?

Speculation is building that Quinn Hughes could choose to seek a move to the New Jersey Devils so that he could play with his brothers, Jack and Luke.
Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford raised a few eyebrows earlier in the summer when he alluded to the possibility of all 3 brothers playing with one another, raising the question of potential tampering.
