Alex Ovechkin's legendary career is coming to a close, and now he's addressed the possibility of having his jersey and No. 8 retired by the Washington Capitals.

Over the past two decades, Alex Ovechkin has been the face of the Washington Capitals franchise, and after accomplishing so much, he's established himself as the greatest player in franchise history.
As he is now 40-years of age, it's only a matter of time until he retires, and as he was attending the farewell game of Pavel Datsyuk, the question of jersey retirement came up, with fellow Russian Sergei Federov set to have his jersey retired by the Detroit Red Wings.

Sergei Fedorov's Jersey Retirement Sparks Ovechkin Questions

When asked about it, Ovechkin's reaction was highly unsurprising, as he didn't make a personal comment, but rather told the reporter to ask the Capitals about it, as it was out of his hands.
"Of course, Fedorov deserves it. But I don't work for Detroit, so I can't say anything. As for the idea of my number being retired by the Capitals, call Washington and find out about it."

Why It's Inevitable the Capitals Will Honor Ovechkin's Number 8

At this point however, it's not a question that the organization will retire it, as they will do it as soon as possible, and perhaps even honour The Great 8 with a statue as well, as he has brought respect and toughness to this organization for the better part of the past two decades.
In that time, Ovechkin has become the NHL's all-time leading goalscorer, all while leading this team to their only Stanley Cup victory back in 2018, as he has established himself as the best player to ever wear the jersey.
As for his jersey retirement, it will come as soon as possible after his retirement, and while he can still clearly play at a high level, his retirement will unfortunately come very soon.
