Capitals' star Evgeny Kuznetsov is once again being called out for one of his signature shootout moves, this time by a controversial former referee. Tim Peel, fired for being caught on a hot mic admitting an arbitrary penalty call, said that a goaltender should charge and rip his head off' if Kuznetsov tries it again.
Kuznetsov made good on his shootout attempt last night, helping the Capitals secure a 3-2 victory over the Flames last night. Kuznetsov's move, which has always proven effective, has him skate slowly and meticulously down the ice before surprising the goaltender with a quick release wrist shot. Clearly, Tim Peel isn't a fan of it.
"This was not the intention when the shootout was brought in. Plays like this make a mockery of our game. The next time he does this the goalie should charge and rip his head off!" - Tim Peel
As expected, when Peel faced criticism for his ridiculous take, he backpedaled and claimed he was only joking.
More people in the hockey world outside of Tim Peel have voiced their own negative opinions of Kuznetsov's signature move, but the criticism never makes much sense. The move is extremely effective, and doesn't break any shootout rules. If anything, the real criticism lies in the validity of the shoutout as a method of deciding games, instead of an extended or continuous 3-on-3 overtime.
