Anaheim Ducks John Gibson linked to Stanley Cup contender
Anaheim Ducks John Gibson linked to the Vegas Golden Knights in a possible trade
For years, there have been rumors surrounding Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson and a potential move out of Anaheim. Despite being linked to several teams, no deal has materialized. However, Gibson could be a fit for a division rival if their goaltending situation falters during the 2024-25 season.
In a recent mailbag article, Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal was asked about the Golden Knights' goaltending situation and the possibility of trading for an upgrade during the season. Webster mentioned that a deal can't be ruled out and suggested John Gibson as a potential option, although trading within the division could be complicated.
"A deal can't be ruled out. But an upgrade could be hard to come by.
Ullmark might be available if the Senators struggle. Another option may be Anaheim's John Gibson, though the Ducks could be reluctant to trade him to a division rival.
The Knights' best bet is hoping their current duo performs well."
The Vegas Golden Knights head into the 2024-25 campaign with
Adin Hill and
Ilya Samsonov as their goaltending tandem. Samsonov was signed as an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and the team also added
Akira Schmid via trade with the New Jersey Devils. On the same day, they moved
Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals.
Despite losing key players like Logan Thompson,
Jonathan Marchessault,
Chandler Stephenson, and
Alec Martinez, the Golden Knights are expected to contend for one of the top three spots in the Pacific Division. They will rely heavily on Adin Hill but also expect Ilya Samsonov and Akira Schmid to see game action throughout the year. As Webster noted, while the team hopes their current goaltending duo performs well, a mid-season trade for a replacement can't be ruled out.
If the Golden Knights find themselves in need of a goaltending upgrade, John Gibson could be an attractive option. However, the challenge will be negotiating a trade with a division rival. The situation remains fluid, and the Golden Knights' performance will determine whether they pursue such a move.
As the season progresses, the potential for a blockbuster trade involving Gibson will be a storyline to watch, especially if Vegas struggles between the pipes.
