Blues' Jordan Binnington tried to steal Alex Ovechkin's 900th goal puck during last night's game, and he finally broke his silence today and revealed why he did so.

Jordan Binnington, on Thursday, admitted he had plans of returning Alex Ovechkin's 900th goal puck, though he had momentarily stuffed it into his pads following the historic goal.
Binnington, age 32, jokingly explained that since he was responsible for the turnover that led to this goal, he had some rights to this puck as well.
"Yeah, I figured ... basically had an assist on the goal there, turning the puck over, didn't think he'd mind sharing (the puck)," Binnington said, per Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic. "I had full intention to give it back to him ... yeah, full intention to give it back."
Ovechkin rewrote NHL history on Wednesday night by becoming the first-ever player to score his 900th goal, as he struck one past the Blues at the end of the second period.

A linesman noticed the situation and came to rescue Alex Ovechkin's puck from the thief, Jordan Binnington

But before Ovi had a chance to collect his puck, Binnington shoved it into his pads before a linesman came over and made sure that it got back to Ovechkin.
"Yeah, I just saw it. I'm not going to comment," the future Hall of Famer Ovechkin said.

The goal gave Washington a 2-0 lead on its way to a dominating 6-1 victory. It was just one more tough night for Binnington, as he was hooked from the game late in the second period, having surrendered four goals on just 15 shots.
He is now 3-5-2 on the season, boasting a save percentage and goals-against average of .859 and 3.34, respectively.
Despite all that, his solid performances for Team Canada during the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year have kept his chances open of being included in Team Canada's roster for the 2026 Olympics being held in Milan-Cortina, Italy.
Maybe he can share goalie duties for Team Canada with fellow Canadian and Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson, who seemed to turn a blind eye towards this instance.
"I was just so happy 'O' got it," Thompson said, per The Athletic. "I don't know, maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to him. Who knows?"

Perhaps this was just because it was a humorous moment on a historic night for Ovechkin.
