Pittsburgh-native prospect and longtime Penguins elite junior player LJ Mooney is having a fantastic performance so far at the Summer Showcase for Team USA.
The Americans were divided into two teams, which consisted of USA White and USA Blue, just for the first day, whereas Sweden and Finland iced rosters that were nearly identical to what their World Junior teams are expected to look like in December.
The teams will switch opponents on Day 2, with USA Blue playing Finland and Sweden taking on USA White instead.
In Game 1, the USA's White team jumped out early on a pair of goals from
Ryker Lee. After Finland's Roope Vesterinen and Jasper Kuhta had given them a 2-1 lead, the Americans responded quickly.
Teddy Stiga notched a couple of goals,
Shane Vansaghi scored one, and Lee sealed the victory with his second of the game. Game two was a much closer contest, especially early on, with a 0-0 first period.

Sweden's Ivar Stenberg scored first in the second frame, but the USA answered with consecutive goals by
Luke Osburn and LJ Mooney, who's making a name for himself with an outstanding performance in the early stages of the tournament.
LJ Mooney, a 2020-2023 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite player as a junior, has been one of the most eye-popping players, with speed and finishing ability on full display so far.
Sweden ended up coming alive late, as
Jack Berglund tied the game and Stenberg finished off with a hat trick, with one on a penalty shot, prior to Felix Ohrqvist confirming the victory with an empty-netter. Action will continue on Monday.
