Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is opening up about the harsh reality of professional sports that saw his good friend Brad Marchand traded to a top divisional foe.

The Boston Bruins have imploded on themselves in recent weeks, and management decided it was time to part ways with a long-time forward that was an instrumental part of their most recent Stanley Cup win in 2011.
Captain Brad Marchand was shipped to the divisional foe Florida Panthers earlier this month at the Trade Deadline; he joins the club that had eliminated the Bruins from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the last 2 years, including in one of the biggest upsets in NHL history in 2023.
It's the harsh reality of the nature of professional sports, and for Marchand's good friend and ex-teammate Charlie McAvoy, it was difficult to see him move on..
It was not fun. It was a really tough day on a lot of different fronts. I've seen a lot of my friends no longer here, and I understand there's a business part of it But it doesn't make it easier.

There's another aspect to this game that has nothing to do with on the ice, and that's the friendships.

Marchand, who has been injured, has yet to officially debut with the Panthers. Ironically, Florida's 1st game after the Deadline was in Boston against the Bruins; Marchand skated on the ice of his now-former home at TD Garden, but wasn't able to dress.
Playing in the last year of his current deal, Marchand has 47 points (21G, 26A) in 61 games played.
