Jack Johnson spent two seasons with the Penguins after their Stanley Cup winning years, and now the veteran blue liner is off to the Minnesota Wild on a PTO.
It's been a very slow off-season for the NHL in recent months, and after weeks with no news, a former Pittsburgh Penguin has now officially found his new home in the National Hockey League.
According to a social media release from the Minnesota Wild, 38-year old Jack Johnson has
officially inked a deal with the Wild on a professional tryout as he looks to prolong his NHL career.
The former No. 3 overall pick has carved out a solid career for himself, playing 149 games for Pittsburgh between 2018 and 2019, also spending time with Los Angeles, Columbus, New York, Colorado and Chicago, most recently playing in 41 games last season with the Blue Jackets.
Over his career, Johnson has tallied 342 points over 1,228 games played dating back to 2006/07, and now, he'll look to continue his career by finding a role on a Wild team that could use some depth on the back end.
Johnson brings Stanley Cup experience to Minnesota
After playing almost 1000 games in the NHL at that point, Johnson came to Colorado, playing a key role with the Avalanche as they went on to win the Stanley Cup, as Johnson played in 13 games in the post-season that year.
At this point of his career however, Johnson isn't going to be a difference maker on the back end but rather good, solid depth for a team that needs it, and while he may not make the team on his PTO, there should be plenty of interest in the former top pick if that ends up being the case.
