Tomas Plekanec, a stalwart in professional hockey since 2003, has officially hung up his skates despite the hope of an extended career.

Plekanec, who last played in the NHL in 2018, had been leading Klado, a team owned by Jaromir Jagr in the Czech Extra Liiga, and served as the team's captain. However, due to health concerns, Plekanec has now announced his retirement.

"I have to stop due to health reasons. I was hoping that a few weeks' rest would have been enough, but that's not the case. I am terribly sorry. I would have liked to help my team, but it would be a huge risk for me."

In light of Plekanec's retirement, Kladno has named Radek Smoleňák, a former NHL player, as the new team captain. They also intend to explore the free-agent market to bolster their roster.

Despite this significant decision, Plekanec did not elaborate on the specific nature of his injury.

Jaromir Jagr, the owner of Kladno, expressed his gratitude and admiration for Plekanec:

"Pleky, thank you for helping us when we needed it most. You sacrificed yourself for Kladno."

"You were a huge role model for the team and I could always count on you."

"And when I came back to the game, you always made it easy for me because you understand me and get along with me on the ice. A long time ago, you could have devoted yourself to your family and stopped playing hockey, but you helped us as long as your health allowed. Above all, I wish you health and happiness."

Plekanec enjoyed a 1,001-game career in the NHL, playing the majority of his matches with the Montreal Canadiens, with a brief stint of 17 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was selected by Montreal in the third round, 71st overall, in the 2001 NHL Draft.
