Hall of Fame GM Reportedly Frontrunner to Take Over Penguins Rival New York Islanders
Many believed that Ken Holland's future in the NHL was done after being fired by the Oilers, but now, the controversial figure is potentially back with New York.
The New York Islanders landed the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft on Monday night, and now, it appears they may have their man to lead them forward after moving on from Lou Lamoriello early in the off-season.
According to reports, Ken Holland may not 100% have the job yet, but at this point in time, all signs are pointing towards the veteran General Manager taking over in a new role with the Islanders.
After moving on from Lamoriello, fans were excited to see the team move in a new direction, and with many young GM candidates out there that have fresh ideas on how to lead an organization forward, the front office has completely ignored all of them.
With the Detroit Red Wings, Holland was key to building the late 90's/early 2000's dynasty that we all remember to this day, but late in his tenure with the team, things went sideways as it was clear the modern day NHL had passed Holland by.
Then, he would go on to Edmonton where he would waste years of
Connor McDavid and
Leon Draisaitl's career, and while they may have been in the Stanley Cup Finals a year ago, that's in spite of Holland's moves, rather than a result of them.
Unsurprisingly, Islanders fans, fresh off the excitement of winning the NHL Draft Lottery are absolutely furious with the idea of hiring Ken Holland, who would not be a positive hire after moving on from Lamoriello.
There's still time for New York to change their mind and go in a different direction, but as of right now it appears that's what they will be doing, and even with the No. 1 overall pick, this puts a damper on all of the excitement that has built up in the last 24 hours.
