Mike Sullivan left the Penguins for the division rival Rangers this off-season, and now he's got a critical decision to make with the naming of their next captain.

The Pittsburgh Penguins saw plenty of success under Mike Sullivan over the past decade, with the team winning two Stanley Cups in that time with Sidney Crosby as their captain.
This summer, Sullivan was fired by the Penguins before quickly joining the division rival New York Rangers, with the team looking to get back into Stanley Cup contention this season.

Mike Sullivan Will Have to Choose a Team Captain for the First Time in Decades

In his entire Penguins tenure, Sullivan worked closely with captain Sidney Crosby, but now he's got a huge decision to make as the Rangers moved on from their captain last season, with a new one needing to be named this off-season.
Current Penguins coach Nick Bonino weighed in, giving the support to Vincent Trockeck, but currently, there are many front runners for the role, with fans anointing Trocheck, J.T. Miller and Adam Fox as the three leaders for the role.
This was something Sullivan recently addressed, and while a captain is likely to be named, the veteran coach had a different take on the situation, noting how much he likes the leadership group.
"The one takeaway that I have from those conversations is I think there's a fair amount of leadership in that room. So, whether you wear a letter or you don't wear a letter, leadership manifests itself in so many different ways."

Ultimately, it appears there is support for all three names for the captaincy role, making the decision even tougher for Sullivan this off-season, but whatever way he goes, he's going to make a big call heading into 2025/26 that could define the Rangers organization moving forward.
