Penguins' Bryan Rust is facing a reality check when it comes to making Team USA for the Olympics; there are no guarantees, even though he is a natural fit.

The waiting game is nearly over. Rosters for the 12 teams competing in the men's hockey tournament at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will begin to be unveiled in the coming days, ending months of speculation, debate, and projection around final selections.
Team Canada is set to announce the remainder of its roster on Wednesday, a reveal that will draw attention well beyond fans and media. Many of the league's top players are watching just as closely.
Connor McDavid and Matthew Tkachuk already have certainty. McDavid was named to Team Canada's preliminary roster in June, while Tkachuk earned his spot with Team USA. Health permitting, both are locked in for the tournament.

What the latest talk is surrounding Bryan Rust

Others remain in limbo. Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson is among those still waiting to see if his name is called. The same uncertainty surrounds Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust. NHL analyst Dave Molinari has identified Rust as a strong fit for Team USA, though that assessment does not guarantee a final roster spot.
"Bryan Rust is a natural for Team USA. That doesn't mean he's sure to make the cut."

What Connor McDavid had to say about Sidney Crosby

Leadership decisions are also coming into focus. Team Canada has not officially named a captain, but McDavid reiterated over the weekend that Penguins captain Sidney Crosby should be the clear and only choice. McDavid has maintained that stance since October, despite leading the NHL with 68 points and Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon sitting close behind with 64.
Crosby has captained Canada at multiple international events, including the 2014 Winter Games, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and the 4 Nations Face-Off.
