The Pittsburgh Penguins have added scoring depth to their roster, signing former 20-goal forward Anthony Mantha after he missed most of last year with the Flames when he suffered a torn ACL.
The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't expected to be overly busy in the
NHL's free agency period , but they have added some scoring depth.
Former 20-goal scorer Anthony Mantha has been signed to a 1-year, bonus-laden contract. His AAV (average annual value) is reported at $2.5 million.
Anthony Mantha has signed 1x$2.5M with PIT. No player card last year because he got hurt, but he's an efficient scorer with decent speed who pushes play in the right direction. Often maligned because he's 6'5 234 and plays like he's much smaller than that.
Mantha was signed to a 1-year contract last year by the Calgary Flames, but he missed the majority of the year after suffering a torn ACL. However, he did have 7 points (4G, 3A) in the 13 games he played before getting hurt.
He started his NHL tenure with the Detroit Red Wings, and played there for the first several years of his NHL career. But he was traded to the Washington Capitals in a multi-player trade in April 2021, which included Richard Panik and Jakub Vrana.
Mantha played several years with the Capitals, but sometimes ran afoul of head coach Peter Laviolette because of his work ethic and was often designated a healthy scratch.
He's since played for the Golden Knights and the Flames before landing in Pittsburgh.
His best years were 2017-18 and 2018-19, when he scored 25 and 24 goals. He has 303 points (146G, 157A) in 507 career NHL games.
