Friedman Links Top Available Coach to the Penguins to Join Dan Muse's Bench
The Pittsburgh Penguins have already hired Dan Muse as their head coach, and could soon bring in a former NHL coach to join his staff as an assistant.
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas dismissed head coach Dan Muse after the club failed to make the postseason for the 3rd straight year, replacing him with former New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse.
Additionally, former Penguins 2x Stanley Cup-winning forward Nick Bonino has been hired to join Muse's staff
as an assistant coach. But they could soon be making another notable hire to join the team behind the bench.
Per Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins could be in on former Hershey Bears and Grand Rapids Griffins coach Todd Nelson:
I heard rumors that Todd Nelson, who won a couple of Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, he could end up in Pittsburgh. So, we'll see where this goes.
Last year, Nelson said that he
hadn't received any interest from NHL clubs for head coaching positions, something that he was open about wanting to explore.
I haven't heard anything and I'm not holding my breath. I've been down this road many times. I'm just focused on the task at hand. Whatever happens, happens.
Nelson recently led the Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, to consecutive Calder Cup Championships.
He does have NHL coaching experience, having been named the interim head coach of the Edmonton Oilers in December 2014 through the end of the season.
He also worked as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars, and also coached the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, where he led them to the Calder Cup.
