Kyle Dubas Opens Up About Nearly Joining Other NHL Team Instead of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas recently disclosed that he nearly had the chance to join another NHL franchise while he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, though he decided against it.
The Pittsburgh Penguins hired former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas shortly after he was let go by the team and after they themselves moved on from Ron Hextall.
There had been, obviously, the situation the spring before, where I had the chance to leave and to be a GM elsewhere. It didn't come to happen for a number of reasons... So Lou's (Lou Lamoriello) view of it at the time was like, 'You know all the people here, you know the players, you know the ins and outs of it,' and so that was a strong push for me to stay.
Reportedly, the Colorado Avalanche had interest in Dubas for their GM job in 2017, but because Dubas was already well familiar with the Maple Leafs organization from his time with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, he decided to stay put.
He would be named the Maple Leafs' GM in May 2018 after Lamoreillo's contract wasn't renewed by team president Brendan Shanahan, who recently had the same thing happen to him.
Kyle Dubas made a major change in Penguins leadership this summer
After missing the playoffs for the 3rd straight year, Dubas made a major change in leadership behind the Pittsburgh bench.
He dismissed Mike Sullivan, who had been on the job for nearly 10 years, and in his place hired former New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse.
Sullivan soon found work as the new head coach of the Rangers.
