The plans of Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas for free agency this summer have been revealed by team beat writer Josh Yohe of The Athletic.
The Pittsburgh Penguins recently made a major change in leadership with the dismissal of head coach Mike Sullivan after nearly 10 years on the job by general manager Kyle Dubas.
Dubas made the call after the Penguins missed the postseason for the 3rd straight year, marking the longest drought of captain Sidney Crosby's Hall of Fame career.
Since then, he's hired former New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse as Pittsburgh's new head coach, but there is still work to be done with the roster.
When it comes to maximizing the time that franchise mainstays like Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang have left in their careers, the thought was that the Penguins could be active in free agency.
I would say that, probably with the UFA stuff (the July 1 signing period), we're probably not (going to be aggressive) unless there's someone young enough who maybe deserves a little bit more term.
Dubas also indicated that he's likely to be more active with trades instead of free agency.
Yeah. Trade, (then) sign guys for longer range (after they've been acquired). UFA isn't a good place to find good value.
