Mike Sullivan was moved on by the Penguins on Monday, and already, a top candidate to replace him in Pittsburgh has now hit the open market.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for three straight seasons, and with
Sidney Crosby and the veteran core remaining, change had to come from somewhere.
On Monday, it was announced that the team were officially parting ways with Mike Sullivan, who ends a stellar 10-year run with the team, finishing with two Stanley Cups and plenty of success before the past few years.
Already, Penguins fans are trying to scour the NHL world to find his replacement, and on Tuesday afternoon, Elliotte Friedman made the announcement that Rick Tocchet would be leaving the Vancouver Canucks, with excitement immediately arising over his potential to sign with Pittsburgh as their next Head Coach.
This one makes sense on many different levels, as he was an assistant with the team for their two Cup wins under Sullivan before making his way to Arizona and eventually Vancouver to mixed success as a Head Coach.
Fans have been very excited about the possibility, but with openings in New York, Boston and the rival Philadelphia Flyers, there's definitely going to be plenty of interest, and with those teams having very intriguing rosters, it's not a given that he'll have any interest in Pittsburgh.
At this point in time, it's unclear whether or not Tocchet is interested in the Penguins job, but if he is, the front office should no doubt be doing everything they can to bring him back to Pittsburgh and make him one of the highest paid coaches in the entire NHL.
